Hiya

First question so be gentle

Van is 1981 Devon Moonraker. Puricleaned the fresh water tank / lines this weekend.

Now when I go away can I safely drink water staight from the tank (now it has had a good clean) or is it advisable to add a drinkable sterilizer tab /boil it first???

Thanx

Ben

I have an 83 Moonraker.
Having sterilised the tank and line at the beginning of the season I just make sure that I replace the water with fresh on each trip and flush through to make sure I have fresh water in the line.
I am happy to drink the water straight from the tank in this country as tap water should be fine.
In France I bought bottled water.

i tend to fill it when it needs it and drink it as i see fit but mostly it is drunk after boiling and being subject to a tea bag.

one thing i would strongly advise against draining the tank down and leaving it empty, this is when it starts to taste funny get bits in it. it's much better to keep what you don't use in the tank so that it can slosh about when you are driving and keep the tank clean.

another thing to note is don't fill it at home if you are going to a camp site, you are paying them you use their facilities, you might as well spin the wheels on their water meter than yours (if you've got one)

I use those tablets every now and again just to be sure after an awfull taste some years ago. Although I do find that unless you well purge the garden hose before you use it you may get a strong phenolic taste from the water which stood in the coils of hosepipe for weeks and then got dumped straight in the tank ... Doh!

I used to work on narrowboats, we used the same as everyone else the puriclean tablets every 6 months and run the whole tank through all the taps. Another top tip is to rip up a bit of sponge and put a small bit in your filling up hose where it attaches to the tap and turn water on, pushing the sponge through to clean the inside of hose, you'll be surprised at how much green gunk comes out. It might even make you feel a bit sick. We used to do it a few times through every 2 weeks.
