when you say expansion tank do you mean the overflow tank the expansion tank and header tank are the same thing, the overflow tank should have coolant in otherwise it will be sucking air in when the water cools, mine occasionaly does the same and has been for 3 years now (only 3-5K ayear though.) keep an eye on it,

there are several other threads regarding the oil in the intake, it is quite norma commonl as long as it has not started causes running problems eg spluttering for the first 10 miles like mine does.

Dan,
Try a bleed, like this in the wiki (top of page).

https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Co ... ing_system" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A faulty thermostat can also prevent the coolant circulating via the radiator, but bleed first.

you said in your first post that the light came on, that is nothing to do with the temperature that is the water level in the expansion/header tank, try shorting the cable in the sensor to see if the light goes off.
I think my thermostat is broken and stuck mostly shut as the temp rises up the heat comes out the blower and the rad feels cold.

If working correctly the LED will flash if the coolant temperature is high, (also if the temperature is normal but coolant level is low).
