1.9DG FI, Gasure LPG, 5 speed manual 1988 LHD

Lost 3rd gear a couple of weeks ago, all others are fine, so have driven approx 200 miles without using 3rd, out of neccessity :(
When trying to engage 3rd it felt like it wasn't quite 'catching' and would grind, so I checked all the linkage and found a bit of wear at base of gearlever. Rebushed it and adjusted, less play but still no 3rd :(

On way home tonight and after pulling off from a junction in 1st changed to 2nd, no problems, then went to 4th (no 3rd remember) and the gear lever went into 4th, but it stayed in 2nd

Pulled off into a layby and vehicle stalled. No matter what I did with the gear lever the gearbox is stuck in 2nd. I crawled underneath and checked from front to back, and all looks good. The shaft into the gearbox is sliding in and out when I moved the shift rods, and it's rotating, but it's firmly stuck in 2nd. 20 mile drive home at 18-20mph

Where should I start to look :?:

I feel for you....

Mine did something similar...only I had to go home in first....fortunately less than a mile!

Aiden (who has answered my post) is the chap to talk to - it looks like yours is a little more serious than mine! He really is the gear box guru!! I do remember reading somewhere that you can change gear at the box...but don't ask me how!

Call Aiden and speak to him - great chap, happy to help and give guidance.

Now I have to find out what a spigot bearing is....ain't life with one of these great?! :)

All the best with yours

Em

Ring Aidan

With the engine switched off (obviously  ) remove the horizontal gearshift rod at the gearbox, using the downward lever and you should be able to select the gears by hand (perhaps struggling a tad with 1st/reverse if it's a 5 speed.

Ian.

Thanks Ian 8)

I've spoken to Aiden and it's going to be costly by the sounds of it, so am going to look at a subura conversion as a possible option :)

If it's going to cost me £600-£700 just to get the gearbox sorted, as might as well consider all the option before spending my hard earned

Well my problem turned out to be a sheared selector fork :(

It's been welded. Gearbox mount knacked as well, so being replaced and putting a new clutch on it at the same time :D

Should be fixed and back up 'n' running by the end of the week :D
