so..the diff was quiet with worn tires on the front and new tires on the back, when i fitted new tires on the front the front diff the diff whined, more on accelerating, less when crusing, and a bit on decelerating .i have just removed the prop shaft and the diff is completly quiet!!.
any comments?

How worn were the front tyres compared to the new rears? Could it have "strained" (sorry can't think of a better word) the VC and now with properly matched rolling radius all round you're hearing a VC that needs a refurb?

thanks Andi, and yes i guess that the diff needs a re-furb [ the vc has failed open, not completly though ], im just looking for other causes,Spain is'nt the country to get parts/re-furb done!.

Change the oil in the front diff and see what comes out, probubly needs doing anyway as its rarely done - if 87ml of metalic goo comes out you can be pritty sure its bad news!

Hi Glen, i changed the oil last year [ bit of a christmas on the drain plug!!] i'll have a good look at the diff when i replace the vc [ second hand from CJ ] but for now i'll leave the prop off [ off to Ireland,England ect for month ].

is it possible that the pinion bearings are worn and that with worn tyres the pinion was being continiously unloaded due to the different rolling radius.
now the tyres are right the diff is being loaded on acceleration and thats how you`ve got a noise.
lee.

Syncropaddy,we get in to Rosslare on the 7 may then on to Ennis [ mates 40th !! ] any good?.
Lee, that sounds like a possibility...the off side drive flange has a bit of play,so?.

Drive flanges often have wear in them, or a bit of play.
Whine is very tyre dependent, though can be pinion bearing/wear as well of course
Tyre-dependent whine often worse on a neutral throttle around 45-50
Bit of a fir tree on plug not uncommon
See what Aidan thinks

I'd say pinion bearing is worn and you'll find there's play when you pull the VC, there should be none; the offside flange is internal diff wear pretty common on the front diff ime, cos it's a 2 pinion diff it can be returned to spec, the rear diff being a 4 pinion one can't unfortunately; 16" trucks are hard on their diffs from what I've seen and so will all the jacked up vans and those with big tyre loads, especially running standard CV's.
