Front end problems! (photos)

Hi all,

So finally got round to stripping out my noisy front drive shaft and here are the results and a couple of questions!

Firstly, I think this is why the joint was noisy!!! As you can see below, the ball cage is broken and the ball and debris is everywhere. Fortunately, I have a replacement joint from CJ.....

Right, some previous owner has broken the stud off the anti-roll bar stabiliser link, and I've been running around for a year without it. Great. Can these be tapped for a bolt, or is it a CJ job, and if so - how do you get the link off? Bentley doesn't say!

Brake disk backing plates are toast. Rusty and flaky as hell. Can these be purchased new, or better in Stainless (have seen stainless 2WD)

Any thoughts appreciated. Kris.

off a 14" with the welded bottom arm, you've got a cast arm like on my 16" that has cranked drop links so I'm not sure it will fit can't tell if yours is straight or cranked from your photo.

Any way if its any good to you

£10+ postage ok?

just bend them off an fight them back on.

I did look at the back plates I've got but they're as good as yours!

Thanks for the reply.

It is a late 1991 14" and I'll check tonight if the link is cranked or not.

Cheers!

this is how cranked a cranked one should be, not just a bit bent like the one above, hope thats clear.

They can be drilled and tapped to take some studding or a sawn off bolt, but the hole has to be smack up the centre of course.. Or can be welded or brazed.
Put something like a rubber grease or moly grease inside and outside the steel sleeve to stop water ingress causing the same problem again and don't overtighten the nut.

Stainless disc dust shields can be sourced from E bay, Jager, Syncro services and I think someone on here from Germany posted to say he had them

I have now found stainless steel backing plates at http://www.vwbusshop.de/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; if anyone else is looking!

Thanks all.
