My new recon 2.1i has a knocking noise at idle, like a ball bearing running around in it.

Is that normal?

Also running on gas, sounds the same on petrol

I forgot to say, it drives fine, pulls away with plenty of power.

Its not a big end knock

It does it when hot or cold

if only we could hear it
then maybe we could make a few suggestions.

what puzzles me is you say its just on tick over.i was thinking it could be a tappet rattle.the cure for that would be to take it for a good 6 mile run.that should cure it...

I may be a little OTT with sound (just been outside to it again), It seems to come from the Dizzy side

Its not tappets.

Could it be just metal to metal

Its probably normal, due to my inexperience with the engine.

Took it for a long run and still the same noise.

Times like this I wish I had a T4

worth a few of these to be ruled out....

have you had the dizzy cap off?
is it relative to engine rev's?
have you ruled out the alternator - worth removing the belt for 5 mins to prove otherwise....
fuel pump?

sounds like the advance weights in the dizzy rattling around.
or an alternator bearing as Dug suggests

Just going by the sound, the alternator would be my first suspect too. That or something else connected to that (or another) belt drive. I'm not that familiar with petrols ...but that noise sounds like a wobbly pulley / loose nut / washer / screw to me

Or possibly a loose exhaust , sounds like a little blow by there as well.

Try the long screwdriver method, rest the end on the suspect component, and the other on your ear. Should be able to pick up where the noise is coming from from that.

I would also have a look under the valve covers and check that all is well.

Sounds to me like it is running shyte due to a sticking valve or summat,,,,

Well then theres one for the books, Fritz it is an Elite recon, however that motor is sweet, it came in for its first service yesterday, oil and filter, that noise was not there so, something has happened on your journey back, you were told that the rotor arm was fecked, have you looked at it as some have suggested? have you removed the fan belt to see if the noise go? again as some have suggested, in fact it was as sweet as a nut when it left as you very well know, if you have a problem that would be clealry covered by your warranty why don't you contact Elite firstly instead of putting it on a public forum

Mr Custard knows dammed well that the motor should not sound like that and perhaps isn't in a position to diagnose the specific fault himself. As far as I can see he is simply asking for advice/opinions as to what it might be,,,,,,and we are simply replying to his question,,,,,well I was anyway....

Personally I would have to agree with with the last poster,,,,I would have made contact with the supplier and waited for their response before offering it to the paying public.....
