I have been reading an article regarding the effect of Phosphates in the coolant additive, causing the pitting in the Alloy heads, thus causing the dreaded drip and failure of the water jacket seal.
Has any one else heard of this?
I am wondering then, if this is the case, how is it possible to find out the make up of G12++

Kev this is why I always try to promote the use of Phosphate Free antifreeze which most maufactures use these days, the only difference tends to be the the cheaper versions will need to be topped up/checked or completely changed annually....

The G12 + is the bee's knees of all things antifreeze which doesn't need changing and cost a feckin fortune....and it is compatable with most of the other earlier versions of the same product..

G12 and G12+ are Organic Acid technology (OAT) anti freezes which are silicate and phosphate free. Glycol the main constituent of anti freeze is corrosive especially to aluminium. Silicate and phosphates where added to to coat the aluminium surfaces to stop the corrosion, but these break down allowing the glycol to corrode the aluminium which is why they have to be changed regularly, also when phosphates are precipitated it increases the corrosion rate which is why OAT antifreezes where developed and generally have at least a 5 year life and in some cases filled for life.

So as I see it, the phosphate free coolant (G12+) does not accellerate corrosion, but it doesn't prevent it completely
If coolant changes were regularly done, say twice a year, then the cheaper phosphated coolant would protect the head from glycol corrosion.
but be rather expensive in the long run.

on the other hand if the G12+ were to be changed once every three years the protection would be increased

you are not going to keep the same coolant in a wbx for three years, so dont waste your money on the g12 stuff.
you only need a sender to go faulty and need to be changed , or a pipe to fail, or the darlek cap to give in and you poured all that money down the drain.......... stick with the comma stuff, same spec, less cash.

So the system requires 8-9L of antifreeze
the comma antifreeze comes in 5L bottles. at £21.17

any one know who regularly stocks it?
