Does anyone know what the difference is between pre 85 and later head gaskets for the 1.6 as there is a big price difference.

Depends on what price you put on yer engine--------- Lol!. a 1.6d CS is no different if you have transplanted with Golf Mk1/2 engine or Cylinder head, What are you talking in price wise??????????? Cheap as Chips or £10. When I had problems with changing 1.6 heads I just ordered and used Elring 3 hole gasket (3rd) hole is thickest gasket -----------------
