4WD isn't always necessary when the wheels are slipping (no offence intended guys...), all that is needed is to lock the differential on the axle.

Is it possible to fit a lockable differential to the rear axle of a non-syncro T25? Not permanantly locked, of course.

It would pay for itself after a few rain-drenched UK summer music festivals...

yes it's perfectly possible to do this, I've built a few for customers; figure on an additional £180 on top of rebuild cost for the case and diff and internal locking parts plus the external vacuum stuff.

Wow, that is WELL worth it.... if my gearbox needed rebuilding. How much is a 4-speed wasserboxer gearbox rebuild (roughly)? To give me an idea of total cost.

Would it affect my MPG?

4 speed rebuild from £570 at the moment
it won't affect your mpg at all
the previous post might not be specific enough though - "plus the external vacuum parts"- which you'd have to obtain, either new from me or used from CJ (the dash switch alone is over £40 new and I've not bought one for a couple of months so they may now be obsolete won't know till try to order one again)

Oh I see. If the external vacuum stuff was to be bought new from you, how much would that be?

This is only an idea BTW. At present my gearbox is fine but I would strongly consider this if I needed a rebuild.

It is also possible to install a limited slip system in my non-syncro bus? I'm having lots of troubles with the snow and ice now.

Is maybe that a good option for us who are not offroading but need extra grip?

I have studded tires, but anyway if one of the tires is getting slightly more grip than the other i'm lost!

Yes it does help by clearing everything in front of you ....

There's a company in the US called Peloquin (I think) that makes a limited slip that can also be locked manually. Have a look on the samba, lots of people there have done it. An LSD is better on snow as it will react instantly, and get you up on the first try. Also, an LSD allows a difference in speed between rear wheels, with the locker engaged on snow you will go sideways at the slightest sign of turning the wheel.

Also there is a very cheep solution to better traction in snow: Sand bags in the trunk. I have 100kg of sand, and 50 more of other stuff, helps a lot!
