Slipping belt

I have a 1987 t25 1600 diesel and i cant seem to stop the belt from the crank to the water pump from slipping can anyone help?

do you have two belts?[ one for the w/pump & one for the alternator], if so you adjust the w/pump belt tension by dismantling the w/pump pulley and removing a shim/shims from the middle of the pulley [to tighten the belt ].

yeah thats it the problem i have is that all the shims are out and its still slipping from what i can find out i have the right size belt on 10x650 so am a bit lost in what to try next to stop it

Is it an old belt? If so it has probably stretched.
One a belt starts slipping it becomes 'glazed' and will slip even more. There is a belt dressing spray that will stop it slipping but is only a temporary fix.
If the belt is old try a new one. If it's new then I would measure it to make sure what is printed on there is correct!

The question you need to ask yourself: with all the shims removed IS the belt still loose? Yes....then the belt is either stretched so needs re-newing or you need the next size down and put some shims back in until correctly tensioned.

can i get a smaller belt than a 10x650 cos i cant seem to find one and i have had two new belts on and both did the same after about a week. could it be i need new pulleys?

I may be wrong (I normally am 
) but wasn't a recommended mod to do away with the two belts and replace with a longer one? You would only need to adjust at the alternator.
I'm probably wrong but I thought that I read it somewhere.
