Why is you prepare to travel to a show on a sunday (BUS TYPES) and start to load up the van on the day before and you start the engine and hey presto..summat goes!!!!
Have just started the engine on the van and the tappets on the right bank are rattling rather noisely and didn't quieten down as they should (being hydraulic)..so i'm not gonna drive it or even put it in the show and shine..
Am rather pissed with the ole' v-dub now..so much for the phrase..'If everything in life was as reliable as a VW!'...

Check your oil level, If it's lower than half then they will become noisy and don't usually clear. Top up to full and run for 3-5 miles, usually sorts it.
If it doesn't then check oil filter next.
Not saying this will sort it but it should if everything is working properly!

The drive to Oswestry would have sorted it, ironically

I agree....these wasserboxer engines have a habbit of loosing their oil out of lazy hydraulic ellements. If the engine just happens to stop in a particular position and is left for some time. Mine rarely does it but on several occasions when it has, it has taken a good 5 miles plus to clear, Chances are that yours would do the same. When it happens it can be a bit of a worry, that is until you realise they all do it and to this degree.
