Campers + height = container?

Hello everyone.

Am looking around at the moment for a van that will get my wife, 1 year old daughter and myself over to Australia in about 18 months time.

Has anyone had any experience shipping a van in a container? I've shipped one previously from Panama to Colombia, but it was the pop top style, will the hi-tops fit in a container?

On a side note, from reading on here it seems the air-cooled types may be better due to reliability / easier to fix, but will they take scorching 30+degree heat in Asia, or would water cooled be better and just hope it makes it :D

Well you'll not be needing a cab heater, so air cold will be fine from in that respect!

Hello - You need a High Cube container which has an external height of 9' 6" but more importantly, the door opening height will be in the region of 8' 5"

Having said all that, I don't know how high you van is, but that's a guide

Cheers

Tim

if its tight there are tricks you can do to squeese it in. eg, put small wheels on, chop your suspension/use ratchet straps to pull it down, might save a load of money if you have to use a special container. I looked into this as well let us know how you get on. who you use, costs etc

Quick figuring says our Reimo topped camper will fit in a high cube with 2" to spare... high cube is 8' 9" high inside, but doors are only 8' 5". Removing vents on top would gain 2-3", another 2" lowering tire pressure or changing wheels/tires, another 2.5" + in springs.

Get a nice caravelle with the big sun roof , fit a good interior and then buy a Timber tech roof , strap it to the roof , take it off the van and then put it in the box and then the roof , when you get to AUS fix the roof with stixaflex and away ya go

why do you need a container?
i was recently speaking to a friend of mine that works for a shipping company in southampton and he advised me to do roll on roll off at a cost of approx $1500 us dollars as we are planning to move to oz in a years time. But we have looked into vw camper prices over there and its just not viable for us to take our bus with us so it will be up for sale next year.

Going to Australia for a year on the work visa on our way to move to Ecuador (wife from there). Hope to be able to ship from Australia to Ecuador, but the cost of this may be prohibitive. No't really interested in buying a van once in australia, as the journey (I tend to find is the best bit, the bit I remember most).

I had tried google, really just wanted some first hand advice, in case anyone had done it before.

ONLY :O :O lol

so you'd recommend air cooled over water cooled?

jonnyels wrote:...he advised me to do roll on roll off...
That would solve a lot of issues, need to look into the possibilities of RORO from Singapore to Aus, then Aus to Ecuador.

Again, thanks everyone :)

ro-ro can be okay, but be careful. If it can be stolen while in transit, it usually is.
