Masking Wheels for Painting

This job took no more than 10 minutes masking from start to finish

Mask with strips of around 12 inches overlapping each piece and inside of rim, rub down and around edge of tyre and rim to get a good bond
Image

when you have a good firm bond use small slightly rounded piece of metal (I used 8 oz Hammer) to rub around edge of rim until rim shows

Remove unwanted tape from inside the rim area
Image

Use blunt rounded flat knife (I used a putty knife) and run it around edge of rim next to tyre and finish off
running your finger around to make a good bond with the tyre
Image

As you can see in the last picture a nice tidy finished edge after painting, I know this will wear with use
when driving but looks tidy to start with.

Hope this will help anyone wanting to paint their wheels

Paint used was Halfords Wheel & Wheel Trim Paint (Silver). I used Grey primer, but on can it said use white primer, reason I used grey wanted deeper colour. Also say's for more durable and better finish use clear lacquer over the paint. I have also done the original hub caps in the same colour and I think it looks ok together, not to shiny and in your face, I will see how this lasts. May even get some lacquer and do the spare to see how it looks.

Well done James, I had a feeling I would'nt have been the first to try this method, in the past when doing this job on other wheels I've tried all
sorts and this is deffo the best method thats worked, without any paint on the tyre. Just thought I would share and help anyone that may not be getting the lightbulb over the head moment
