Driveshafts and CV joints.

Van is a 1.9 DG petrol - panel 1983

I noticed a knocking and it seemed to be coming from the rear driverside.

It could be nothing but I got undearneath the van and got my hand on the drive shaft.

It seems to move quite easily left and right about 10 to 15mm play between the gearbox and the wheel.

Is this normal or are the CV joints in need of replacment.

It looks like a simple job in the haynes OR is it?

Replacing CV joints is a fairly simple job.
The joints are attached by allen headed bolts or splined bolts. clean them out really well before starting.

The drive shafts should have a fair amount of left right play.
Moving the joints left right by hand may redistribute the grease and give you another 1000 miles or so knock free motoring.

Just took my drive shafts of to fit a set of wheel bearings.
A couple of good hints are:
1. In removing the drive shaft at the wheel is to use an extended 6mm allen bolt. You usually need at least 150mm (6 inches in old school) to be able to work on it.
2. A head torch is vital. Its dark in there and you need a torch right beside your eyes.
