Cruising speed power surges?

Hi folks
On the way back home last night, traveling from Stockport to Peterborough, whilst on the A1 cruising around 55-60mph & after about 20-30 mins of cruising, I could feel the vans power surging. It started as if the throttle had been let off & then re-applied, it only did it whilst cruising, if I put my foot down it would power through it.
Any ideas what it could be? I'm thinking a carb strip & clean.
