VW rear wheel carrier - bushes

Hi there. I'm furtunate enough to have an original VW rear spare wheel carrier on my 16" syncro. The pivots have quite a lot of play in them and this makes the whole thing a bit wobbly. I assume it's due to wear to the bushes and/or pivot pins. However it's not obvious to me how to get the pivot pins out. Has anyone done this and If so have you any recomendations for suitable bushes? Cheer Matt

Some of the bushes have very tight roll pins that are a bugger to hammer out, they then have a mixture of what looks like phosphor bronze bushings and wavy washers. The only one I have dared take apart is the one for the locking handle, but it was not too difficult, and is good practice for the others. I would imagine an engineers could replace and or refurb the bushes. My rubber bung thing is split, I keep longingly looking at door stops in case I see one the right size for a replacement!! If you do get it apart, please take some photo's.

Simon.

Hi Simon. Thanks for the reply. Rubber bung also split on mine and I've just put lots of tape around it. Same 'door stop' thought had occured to me. We'll see who finds one first. When I dare take pivots apart I'll let you know what I find. Unless someone tells how to do it I'll probably put this off for a little bit while I try and trace why the front suspension makes wobbly 'knockey' noises on bumps. (MOT was clear and I also changed top ball joints with no effect!) .

PS Basic camper conversion progressing, used van first time as a very basic family camper in wales this weekend. Still LOT's to do. Did it opposite way to most people just for the hell of it. Upper and lower double beds are both at the front end of the vehicle. Seating area has all 4 seats facing the table when in camper mode. All area behing rear of sliding door is currently unused in drive or camper mode. (Kitchen and all the junk will go here eventualy) .. All possible cause my hi-top is so bloody big, Approx 6 foot clearance standing on top of the engine bay! Pictures when I get a digital camera!

cheers matt

What you will find is a bronze bush in the carrier and spacer washers. The pins are 10mm hardened steel with a spline on one end. To get these out you need a pin punch of about 8mm diameter and a lump hammer. Plenty of WD40 or similar the night before and hit them the opposite end to the splines. Can be easy as my first pin was but the lower pin was a bit*h. I removed mine and machined up a new set of bushes out of bronze and used stainless spacer washers.
