Had same problem a long time ago. Memory is a bit vague now but I
think I had to make sure the two "pins" on lower column had located in rubber bushes, whilst at the same time ensuring the black plastic "sleeve", which has flasher self cancel lug on, was pushed into centre of column lock and upper part of column was located into bearing. I'd doubt the bearing would fail if all you've done is remove the wheel. I now await being corrected by someone more knowledgeable!!!

I seem to remember that it all rested on the column being fully home in the bearing housing (part of lock assembly).
Hope I've explained that OK.
Do you have a manual? I can try to send a scanned picture from my manual if you're really stuck.

you need to make about a 13mm(dont quoute mne spacer) i wouldnt drive as is its dangerous the cloum has tendency to pop downwards out of its top bearing otherwise

Quote gti mad man.....about the need to fabricate some sort of spacer....
I also heard this from several reliable sources before I fitted mine. I think I was lucky as I've had mine fitted for 14 months now, driven around Europe and it remains solid without spacer, some do some don't...I keep checking and I'm concious of this info if ever it changes.

I guess you must know about the trick with the motherboard mounting posts then? to raise your switches by 10mm.....so the self cancel works on the indicators...

HI GUYS
thanks for the replys i have put the old wheel back on which is a shame as the gti one looked real cool
now this spacer is it just like the black tube which goes into the top of the coloum but about 13mm longer so when the new wheel is fitted it pushes the out towards me 13mm or have i got the wrong idea totally has anyone got a photo drawing or can explain in understanable terms what this spacer is like or pushes against
thanks again
