Diesel Pump reconditioning - advice please!

i have a 1988 1.6td JX - recently fitted recon only done my first 500 miles in it- which goes well.
However i have recently noticed a small diesel leak, which when on motorways ends up spraying the rear door of my van and shows up in small pools of diesel in the pockets on the engine block.
Having had an engineer look for leaks in the system he recommended having the diesel pump recon'd too.

i have done a bit of research and one company (first diesel - Thornton Heath) quoted £225 for the recon of my pump and around £180 labour to take it out and refit it.

That is alot more than the figure i came up with in my head!

ALso i fail to mention other problems: slower than normal up hills, at least three attempts to start on cold start, white smoke sometimes when cold.

SO! my question is: will spending all my money on the fuel pump be worth it? will it improve the problems mentioned?
i appreciate your (undoubtedly much more experienced than me) response.

Dear Sir, as with any fitted re con unit (engine) all the ancillaries are simply swapped over from your old (tired) motor, these items include fuel pump, Vacc pump, manifolds etc etc......

But what we tend to forget is that all these items have also done lots of miles and are also well worn , so in reality items such as water pumps and fuel delivery pumps should also be re placed or at least Re conditioned.
So to answer your question, if there is any doubt with the fuel pump due to fuel leaks, poor performance, bad starting etc,etc and it wasn't done at the time, then you simply have no choice than to have it serviced/ reconditioned.

The price you have been quoted does seem to be very reasonable to me if it includes everything, ie parts/labour and VAT, if not then ask for a pro former rather than estimate , so you know exactly what you will be paying.

Regards,

Fritz,,,,,,

PS , don't forget to mention all the other running problems you are having before they start the job..... :D
