Hi I have posted this on technical and looked in wiki (that page is blank re timing belt)- can anyone tell me where the timing marks are on a 1985 T25 1600 diesel engine please?

You set cylinder #1 at TDC ( I think this is the one nearest the gearbox) then you set the cylinder head at TDC by rotating it until you able to line up a notch on the camshaft forward edge (again nearest the gearbox) with the with the cylinder head. The fuel pump it then also rotated so that you can get a round bar through the gearwheel and into a shallow hole of the same diameter in the pump housing.


Be aware that if the fuel pump gearwheel has been removed then you will need a DTI guage to set the pump properly - this involves removing a blanking std in the centre of the 4 fuel lines on the pump and them turning the pump until you get a specific reading


Sorry these are somewhat vague instructions but (for me at least) it's pretty hard to explain without pictures and it's also been a couple of years since I last did a diesel engine!

Thanks for that Doug. I am near Matlock, son in law to be is my mechanic so I shall print out and give to him. Could be weekend before he gets chance to have a go at it and this is Easter, but if we get stuck we will take you up on your offer even if its only by mobile phone advice - it is in his own interests to get mil back on the road again I'm sure lol!
