Got an 81 A/C not usre if engine is original but what should the top speed be? it's just had new heads fitted and some tinware still missing so I didn't want to nail it did reach the giddy speeds of 50mph on occasion what should it be and what should be a safe cruising speed on M/way etc

I've got a 2L a/c and around 65 is as far as I've dared push it, it seems happier in the 50-60 range.

I've upgraded to 2.4 air cooled and that will cruise at 70 buts thats about it. 60 ish sounds about right for the 2.0 though

mine cruises at between 60-70 most of the time, rarely under load, but the original engine felt alot looser and quite often reached 80 odd on the flat sections of motorways

Depends on what van you got, Tin Tops once they have warmed up 80 is easily achievable, high tops and pop tops depending on the shape of the roof about 70. It also depends on how fast you want to see the fuel gauge drop.

Hi,
60 is about the norm. Have had 70 out of it quite a few times but the fuel dwindles away rapidly.....I think their quite happy at 60- 65..

i knew someone would be amused by this!
Pep - speed isnt everything... well, i suppose i'd like a few more MPH
mine sits pretty happily 65-70 and will go up to 80 on the flat - sure MPG would be much better at 60 though
hills always slow them down, even on the motorway

Speed isn't the point. What is the point is i sit at 60mph and i have enough in store to overtake. Hills wont bother the engine and i'm getting 30+ mpg. Everyone thinks OH Subaru speed freak. They are wrong. What pi$$ed me off about the 1.9DG i had was i couldn't safely move between motorway traffic. It would cruise at anything between 50-70mph but if you wanted to overtake a lorry doing 56mph it didn't have the nutz to move into the the flow of traffic. At 70mph mine is sitting at 4,000rpm with another 2,500rpm in store shoud i need it. Not ridiculing anyone but you know it makes sense.

point taken - it's true, i automatically thing speed freak - maybe it's because I wouldn't be able to trust myself to cruise along if I had all that power at my fingertips!

this just reminded me of something i was going to post. Am i in danger of 'knackering' my engine if I frequently sit at 70? what the air cooled will do and what is good for it must be 2 different things...

as long as it is in fine tune then realy the faster you go the cooler the motor as your moving more air thtu it.
heat can build up with lean mix or off timing
