ignition switch...which bit?

Hi chaps, when then the van is hot, it doesn't want to start......but hold the key for a few seconds and it will satert. VWcamperfan suggested some vw 40...and this seemed to help. Went out in her today, and she got warm in traffic. I parked up at supermarket, and 10 mins later she didn't want to start. Held the key round, and after a few seconds I got a sudden loud fast clicking behind the dash(?) then it started. Had to fill up with gas, which meant stopping and starting again.
So, stopped at the pump, sprayed the key both sides with wd40, and put it in the ignition. Started immediately where only a few minutes previously she didn't want to know.
Leads on starter motor checked by the way.
So what part is the WD making work properly???
Thanks all
Emma
