Ok sorry I only come on here when I have problems..

.. but here you go.
1.6 na derv 1983 wont start. Batt good turning over smoking but just wont start I have warmth at the injectors the relay cuts out.
Ok I have been a naughty boy and not started her for a while ( like over winter) but normally have no probs.
The only time this happened before I had the starter rebuilt and it turned out that a bush (I think) was worn and therefore the starter was not turning over quick enough to start her....what do you think same prob?
The last time this happened before the starter was rebuilt it would start with a tow but not otherwise....spose I need to find someone to give me a tow?!?
Anything else I have missed?
Ta Dave ( good to be back aherm

take the battery off and give it a good 24hr charge , also check that the glow plugs are all working and are getting good and hot

Thing is I have put the batt on charge over night but should have been good as I have battery conditioner which I rotate through the winter on three batts (Van, leisure and motorbike) I will also try the booster pack I have which was a little flat. How warm should the glow plugs be? I'm not new to the van but been a long time since I needed to do anything like this!
Ta for the reply Dave

Since you have a booster pack:
Remove one of the glow plugs - pick the easiest one to remove first, a couple are for small hands only
Plug the positive (red) clip off the booster the the tip of the glow plug that has the thread on
Plug the negative (black) clip onto the main body of the glow plug - MAKING SURE that both clips do not touch.
The glow plug should go bright red in a few seconds.
If it takes 5 seconds or more then they might need replacing

Ok the glow light has always and still does stay on for ages I very rarely wait till it goes out as the plugs are usually warm before it goes off ( I still give it 30 seconds or so.)
This time I waited untill it went out and pre warmed again to make sure.
The glow plugs I changed less than 10k miles ago with the injectors starter motor and alternator.
Smoke color dunno really... will try again tomorrow and let you know how I get on.
Dave
I guess the smoke is similar to when I had the glow fuse blow once. Just out of interest with cranking should the glow fuse get warm? I am talking about the 30 amp mcthingy on the firewall.

Just out of interest if the starter isn't turning 'quick' enough can I get a refurb kit to recon the starter?
Money is a bit tight and the last time I had this done it cost me an arm and a leg.
Dave
Ok update booster pack and batt on and still wont start .The glow fuse is ok, I have continuity from the relay to the no1 glow plug. Its warm to touch but wouldn't say its red hot the top of the glow plug . It just sounds to me as if its not quite turning quick enough sometimes just sounds like its gonna start then sounds slower again.Oh and the smoke I would say is black. Got 12.7 v on the battery but this has prob gone down a bit from cranking...hellllllp!
