Hi peeps. I have a 1.6 d in my panel van, not sure what it came from or what engine it is, it is none turbo. Its beginning to die on me, oil everywhere, from dipstick and manifold, its breathing heavy too. My mate says he can put new seals on and new rings skim the head etc for 300 quid. Only thing is i quite fancy a 1.9d but im not sure how to go about converting it, i need to know what modified bits i need. I know i need a sump and somet to do with the dip stick but the rest im unsure. Is it worth getting my old one sorted for 300 or will it cost me more to get another sorted out. Any suggestions welcome. Cheers

Sorry I can't really advise you about what to with your existing engine. The 1.6D in your van is probably the original engine & these engines were first put into T25s in 1981. There are many people who have had 1.9TD engines from Golfs/Jettas etc transplanted into a T25.

A coachworks builder had told me about the various engines used in the type 2 T3 and he recommended the 1.9 TDi.
He replaced a 1.6 diesel (in his words he thought it was crap) and was glad that he put the 1.9 TDi lump in it.

a 1Y a 1.9 straight diesel it would be the easiest and cheapest and economical swap from a 1.6 a na diesel use the original exhaust and mounts you will have to modify some stuff like the throttle lever and connect one wire to the pump you can also go for the aaz which is a 1.9TD or a TDI but then you need to use a TD exhaust set up the aaz will fit staright in but you will have to modify the mounts for a tdi and also you need all the original loom and also the ignition and the key more info on the brickyard good luck with it
