Fridge problem

Got this used fridge to replace an old one.

Here's the thing, if I flip the fridge upside down for a few hours then flip it back up, it works fine on 240v....

For about a day or less....

Then it becomes hot again. I can swear I can smell ammonia but I'm assuming it's from where the previous owner cleaned it.

Then I have to flip upside down again to get it working again.

Does the same, whether it's powered off 12v or gas.

Any ideas, or should I ditch it and get another one. Got this off the Bay of Fleas - many months ago.

if you can smell amonia its the coolant, and it could well be leaking. Check it out or ditch it!
the idea of turning them upside down is to wash the crystals of amonia solution away that form at the top of the pipes when in use.

Thanks. I'm unsure whether it is ammonia or bleach I smell. Anyway, any other suggestions? It sure gets hot in the back of that thing when it's not cooling.

it does get hot, thats how it works, the flame or element heats the coolant, and a heat exchange takes place, if the coolant isnt moving, because there is a leak the heat exchange wont happen.

if its bleach put a few slices of bread in the fridge with a lemon cut in half, the lemon cancells out the bleach, and the bread absaubs the odour

Rozzo, you're a star, but I just spent a load of readies on a used WAECO Coolmatic MDC-50 - no more absorbtion fridge woes. By the way, the door on the fridge you got wouldn't have been goldish-yellow would it?
