2 Queries, One Gearbox, one ICE

Hi, i'm looking for a little help. The second query is a direct result of my being a numpty.

Q1. I'm on my secnd T25. This one used to be a 1.6 diesel, but the previous owner has upped it to a 1.9 (Seat) diesel engine, and has used the 'box of an Aircooled as he reckon'd it gave better ratios for hills etc. I'm in complete agreement. All runs fine, except there's a sort of rubbing noise that seems to be coming from the dark hole where the gear stick pops out; kind of a 'whine' you could call it, that slightly varies in pitch with pressure on the gear stick in different directions, and cuts out completely with the clutch down. It would be quite a quiet ride if it wasn't for that.... any ideas?

Q2. as i'm sure is well known, the head unit slot is a little shallower than it perhaps should be on the water cooled t25; i know this because on my previous van (which i'm still sad I had to sell), I bought a great Alpine head unit, that had to stick out a bit. Well, i've a new van now, but clearly not a good memory, for I appear to have bought another Alpine head unit (they ARE good units) - and surprise surprise, it don't fit (picture my face, proudly fitting shiny new kit and then a strangely familiar realisation hitting home!). Question is, do I have to live with it... has anyone made an widening fascia or something like that which would neaten it up a bit? Or any other ideas?

I hope somebody can help. Q1 is a realy mystery to me, I'm not massively mechanical.

Thank you

Dumpy - actually Dumpy was the old van, I haven't logged onto 80-90 in the 4 years since she left me! Must get a new name for the new whip.
