Hi folks
been doing the the searches for previously asked questions but I can only read so much, so sorry if this is a repeat question.

Not had the van long, it's my 1st one, but it sounds like the exhaust has started to blow, dunno where abouts but looking at the system it's old & crusty but the silencer looks newish.

I would like to replace the system myself but what pitfalls are there that should be expected?

Cheers
Steve :)

Hey Steve,

I'm also trying to replace a part of my exhaust, one of the issues i'm facing is getting the bolts off for the tail pipe....seem to be holding their ground for now. Also don't forget gaskets and some fire gum to get a good seal at the joints. :ok

The biggest danger is snapping the exhaust head studs, this entails drilling out the remaining stub and replacing them ... preferably without knackering the head

It usually has the potential to turn ugly

Watch for the cylinder head exhaust studs shearing off. They did in mine last year.

Had to drill out and retap. Nightmare.

cheers for the replies :ok

Is there anything to try & help prevent the studs snapping, heat, easing oil or anything else?

thanks again :)

A good graphite penetrating fluid fed into the studs and nuts for a few days before the off, extreme caution and using a good socket set .... the bolts and nuts are M8 so have a 13mm head, I used everything from 14mm down to about 8mm with the obvious exception of 13mm

Good luck.

Ian.

What Ian said.

I sprayed mine every couple of days for 10 days or so with PlusGas before they were attempted to be removed. No problems at all 8)
