Ok, I have renewed the coil for a 009 unit, got a new set of HT leads, got a dizzy that works from a breaker, renewed the relay in the box next to the ignition amp module. I have power at the primary and secoundry points of the coil when the ignition is on but no spark when turned over using a test lamp. I have 12volts at the positive terminal when the ignition is on. I have continuity of the HT leads from the dizzy cap. Still no dam spark. I had a mobile mechanic come round to day who was as usefull as its on a fish. He managed to do the some of bugger all and did'nt know his a*** from his elbow. I have a unit tester ect so if some one could give me a list of things to check and if I should renew my ignition module ect. I know my timing is slightly out but I should still get a spark. It was runnig fine untill I changed the battery and then it was abit hard to astart and cutted out when coming to a halt. When it was warm it ran fine. then the other day I jumped in and had to pump the peddle to get it to run other wise it would die and then it just stopped never to start again.I 've got a kitesurf comp in two weeks so I need it to be running sweetly as watergate bay is a long way. If I win owt I will dedicate it to the person who got me running :)

Its not a blue coil is it?--you said you got an 009 dizzy from JK(which was wrong)if they sent you coil to match that will be wrong--JK list-a before'84 & after'84 coil---

--might be an idea to go back to the breakers & get the coil that went with the distributor--

I suggest that if you have old fashioned points in the distributor you:-

1/Take off the Distributor cap.
2/ Take out a spark plug and put it somewhere where it will earth.
3/ Switch on the ignition.
4/ Bridge the contacts in the distributor cap with the rotor arm making sure you are holding only the insulated parts.
5/ Open the points with an insulated screwdriver.
Every time you open the points there should be a spark at the plug.

If not try with coil/ distributor wire held a little bit away from earth.
If not check the Low voltage wires going to the coil and see if the low tension circuit is fully connected

Incidentally if you had to pump the accelerator pedal it could be something to do with the fuel not the ignition!

I had this on a van the other day! The plug for the amp had pulled out slightly and was just enough to look right till I pushed it in and then it fired up first time

Worth a check??

I have voltage at my coil and the only thing i havent changed is the amp. Do these pack up? Could this be the reason i had had aweak spark when it did run?

Yes the amps just go dead.. but you must use the right coil with them..
get the one with the coil and dist you got..

if you want to be sure to have a spare.. a lot of golfs and audi's had the same unit.. there are about 4 or 5 part numbers that are interchangable.. Ill see if I can find them..

then, you need to time it up for 5-7 deg BTDC.

there is a check you can do at/near TDC.. all connected and ign on.. dist cap off coil lead very close to earth.. but I will have to think about it..

best way to check for a spark is to get someone to turn it over a few times with the coil lead end close to earth..
