Loud knocking from back wheel

Hi! I have an occasional loud knocking noise coming from the rear wheel of my van, it is not there now, but when it does happen, it is really loud, it's lasts for about 10-20 miles and then goes off, it has been happening on and off for about three years, each time it happens I think the wheel is going to fall off, then when it goes off I forget about it. I had a friend hang out of the window and he says it sounds like the back wheel on passenger side, the van is automatic and has recently had a new engine fitted. so I know it's not the engine.. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for that I will tell my son Chris, god I hope it's not a big job, he cringes when I turn up in my camper, he just knows it's going to take up all his weekend. I hope he's not reading this or he will do a runner.

Yeah, likely a CV. They get into an awkward position and clonk like mad. Must admit I got desperate over winter this year (mine are well old) and made a hole in each gaier and punped em full of grease. Shut them up all winter but will have to replace all four I guess shortly. So far I've purchased the clips for the gaiters - lol.

Nuts and tyres have been checked, noise has stopped again, but no doubt will come back, I've had it for three years on and off, I'm just waiting for something to drop off. the most logical sounds like the cv, I haven't seen Chris yet, think he must have been reading these posts he's avoiding me, (sensible man). Probably catch him in the pub Friday night, best time to ask, when he's had a few pints. Mums ey!!! who'd have em?? poor lad,

Oh heck!!!!! now you are getting technical, I have heard of cv joints, but not air thingys, I will ask Chris to have a look, when he dares to show his face, but please keep the suggestions coming, so at least he will know what to look for, when it is sorted I will let you all know, as I have said before, I have had this on and off for about three years, and would you believe it, when Chris is travelling with me it doesn't happen (typical, a bit like taking your child to the doctors and they are Ok when you get them there). Now Sian Barker has heard it, so at least I am not going round the twist, (well not yet anyway). The noise is really loud, enough to turn heads on the pavement, very embarrasing when you pull into the garage for gas.

Hi Everyone! I have ordered new CV joints inners and outers, for both sides, from Euro parts and Chris has offered to fit them, one weekend, we have dug the Haynes Book out, so I will let you all know,if it works, it might take a few months, cos! the banging isn't all the time. so I will have to do a few hundred miles before I can say if it has worked, but we think it is better to be safe than sorry. I am going away for a few days this week, so I hope nothing drastic happen before I get them fitted, so fingers crossed. Thanks ever so much to you all for your ideas and advice, Chris said he thought it could be the cv joints, and you all have confirmed it. The thing that worries me, is only myself and Sian have heard the noise, so everyone is just going on my description. Never mind.
Thanks again
Sandra
