brake calipers

Hi guys does anyone know which calipers were fitted to a 1989 Syncro have looked on the calipers but can't see anything except DE need to order seals and dust cap as mine are gone thanks paul

They'll either be ATE, where the two slider pins are visible, or Girling, where the pins slide in the carrier. They both use the same pads.

There are two kinds of late callipers. I found this out while i was changing mine a while back.

think its the ate ones then as can see the pins thanks guys, would have imagined that girling or ATE would have been stamped on them though

My 16" has the Ate ones but the raised lettering is quite small and quite hard to find. As I recall when I needed to order seals I took the wheel off to get a decent look.

ATE use allen key to undo, Girling use 13mm socket and 17mm spanner to undo the caliper from the carrier, the markings will be buried under the rust

yep they are ate checked out the photos on brickwerks the ate ones have 2 sets of lugs on the calipers girling only have one set and are more angular just got to make sure the guy at vw orders the right ones now be careful with partnos vagcat and etos seem to have differant ones thanks again guys, just saw your post aidan ah yes the elusive 7mm allen key dont leave home without it

just to let you know the seal sets for these are listed as obselete from vw but other suppliers my have them as i was told by my unhelpful vw parts guy

Take your old one to gsf and they do an exchange for a recon one. Say you get trade rates at gsf with the club your with (80-90) before they wright the invoice out and save 20% too
