Pre 85 exhaust on post 85 engine

Hi,
New exhaust time has now arrived, just had good look & I have a pre 85 exhaust (Aircooled) on my 1988 water cooled engine
Why are there 2 different models as it appears to be a good fit? Will this have had any affect on the engine performance ?
So I have narrowed it down to 2 new exhausts, the VW speedshop OR La performance, which should I get??
Thanks

are you sure the engine is a 1988, may have been swapped out previuosly, you'd have to check the engine number to be sure, but then the early exhaust is cheaper and previous owner may have been cost concious, though probably lost what was saved on extra fuel costs
the early exhaust is carried almost entirely on the exhaust studs and is less optimal for breathing especially on the 2.1 hence the later exhaust, which also has the silencer box supported and the manifolds too so less strain on the studs.
Have you considered a brickwerks stainless system, same pattern as the original late exhaust and very nice

Did think that it may be an earlier engine, but it is water cooled (1.9) so it can't be I don't think, as all pre 85 were water cooled? someone correct me if I'm wrong.

It is an early exhaust, but it is the same fitting / mounting so putting on a later style should help the engine breathe, now I just need some one to sell me a ss exhaust, LA performance, called on 3 days ago, no answer, no call back

, vw speedshop,

same, phoneix exhausts same.

wanted to fit over easter, what are the chances of getting one in time now

Try 'Turbo Thomas' he has made me an early stainless system and also a full system for an Aircooled for someone on the forum (Richnewton).
Google the name and you'll find what you want.
