Whats the best alternative petrol engine for best MPG

I am thinking in the long run of swapping my engine for something more economical.
I have read threads where some people get 30-37mpg and obviously you wont get this with a type four engine. So what do they use?

What would you recomend?

I would like to be on the lookout for an engine!

Thanks

Imagination mostly.

Subaru EJ 2.2 or better yet 2.5, but plan on spending £3000+

There are a few other conversions, like VW inline fours, Ford Zetec, .. are a couple more, but can't remember them now.

Why not convert it to run on LPG?

At the mo I am getting around 40mpg cost equlvalent from a 81 2lrt CU on LPG.

Petrol is 96.9p and LPG 49.9p.

Today done a 150mile trip where I was flat out most of the way cost me just over £17

After diesel, just LPG whatever engine it is....

if you want the best engine, I'm convinced by this conversion now:

a 5k dollar engine swap - weird that we have that engine by the bucketful over here and noone does that as a conversion here or in germany - is it cos we are dumb or is it just the whole ford thing, or are we just lazy ? or is it pooh ?
I did contact them a few years ago and they would sell out a kit, but now the pound is worthless it would be cheaper to diy

stay stock, service it properly and lpg it if you do the miles imho
