anyone tell me how to finish off a paint job.im gonna attempt to spray the van :?
heres what i want to do with it
i want all round the windows and in the recess that runs around the middle (sides and back )in satin black
if im right i can over spray onto the rest of the van that im gonna do in white
then when thats dry ,mask off the black to spray on the main colour(white)

thing i want to know is how do you finish the edge off that will appear after i remove the maskin tape? and also when is the best time to remove it?

cheers..dave

Using masking tape will create a feathered line and will not give you a really clean edge. Acceptable lines can be acheived by controlling the direction of the spray away from the edge and not into it. It is also porous and if you get too much top coat on it it will bleed into the paint below or soften it and, when removed, can take the paint off below. You must make sure that all coats have fully hardened before masking and 'how long' depends on the type of paint, wether it has been air dried or baked. Pretty sure the pro's use a 'film' that is non absorbent to achieve clean edges but do a search on google or ask a pro Paint factors.

One final thought, usually best to put dark on light especially stripes and flashes but thats my method.

What you need is 3m fine line masking tape. This comes in a couple of widths, 3mm 6, and i think 9mm.
Heres some on ebay pretty cheap.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3M-06521-Fine-Lin ... 240%3A1318

This can be applied easily round corners, as long as the tape is not too cold. I use this tape alot on motorbike paintwork and so far its never let me down.
The trick to getting a nice edge is to remove the tape when the colour you have applied has just flashed off. In other words before it fully dries and is still a little stringy.
Check out my pictures in the garage, all my van was masked out with this same tape

Hope this maked sense and helps :ok

Chances are that your spraying the top coat on a cold panel. Difficult to get right when the weather isn't exactly ideal for spraying (supposed to be getting warmer and when it does you will find it a lot easier). If you 'roller' it then the whole point of using barcoat goes in the bin as you can apply enamel over virtually any paint but the drying time will be longer with runs and sags still causing problems. Is it absolutely necessary to get the top coat on now rather than wait untill the weather improves?

i get good results using insulation tape from the poundshop, it aint porous and there is no bleeding through (under the tape) its cheaper than masking tape and comes off without a fuss and the line is neat.

no ,its not.the reason i got the bar coat was because i couldnt see how the finish on the panels looked after rubbing down.the van was rollered before with hammerite and was never flatted back and it has big thick yellow lines painted along it which are a pain to flat back to the rest of the panel and after a good sanding i coudnt spray undercoat on as it reacted.the van can stay in barcoat till whenever im ready to paint it but it says on the tin not to get it wet after so if im right i would need to put a thin coating of undercoat on it to seal it in.
its done my head in today ive had to have a break.ive managed to rub down all one side and the front but its slow going....i dont envy the guys who do it for a living.so hopefully tomorrow i can get some more barcoat on if its not too windy ..or raining :|

im starting to like the colour of barcoat

Roller it. It's not quite as easy as it sounds and just as much hard work but easier and cleaner than spraying.

ordered the rustoleum today
i just dont want to cover the van in top coat and it be uneven where ive rubbed down.so i may aswell use up the barcoat on the rest of the van so i can see where needs more work.the top coat i sprayed on was just some of the black round the windows so i could get them back in again before the rain comes but it was a reet mess.
the van dont have to be perfect and after all this rubbing down i dont mind cutting back after rollering...also i only have my front garden to work on and when i sprayed the black i had to get it off the house window first before i took it off the van  so i will be rollering me thinks

Spraying is a fine art that takes a bit of practice and the right equipment. But unless you can spray indoors, forget it anyway. My bus has good paintwork so that's not a worry, I spray my Minis in the garage, but son's Capri is too big to get round for spraying, so that will be subbed out when it's ready.

Where did you get the barcoat from? I've not been able to find any, and I've had some paint interference issues on one of my Minis. And, oddly enough, a guitar!
