Hi All,

The little "flange pipe" that connects the front pipe to the silencer has broken away where it joins the silencer. In these times of economic crises does anyone have any suggestions as to how to perform a temporary fix that would last a couple of months to save me forking out £96 (GSF T25 Turbo Diesel 8/89 > 11/90) on a new one? I will obviously buy a new one eventually, or a good 2nd hand one (anyone?).

Here is my suggestion remove the silencer box this shouldnt be a problem WD 40 the bolts&nuts soak then undo.With box removed obtain some sheet metal then cut to shape to the end of the box where the flange pipe fits to.Get some one local to you to weld this to the box cut a hole to fit the flange pipe & weld I have done this myself and other patching up to a 1.6td exhaust silencer box over time and saved it.Provided you can get access to welding facilties DIY mig welder person or local garage max cost £10.00 proberly.

I think you can get (or used to be able to) a sort of silencer putty for filling holes, might work if it hasn't completely come away yet? I've mended an exhaust using a tomato puree tin and two jubilee clips before, it was only supposed to be temporary but it went through the mot and was still on it when i sold the van much later.

Thanks for the replies. It has come away completely unfortunately, so it looks like the welding option if I can find someone. I may try with the putty also though, would this potentially act like an adhesive also?

As i said remove the box and get it welded.There may be a club member near you that could do it.Try the wanted forum.Good luck.

has it rusted thru or snapped owduck....if its snapped i might be able to run a bit of weld round it for you if you can get it off and over to stoke.............

unless you can clean up both parts you want to weld until you get good clean solid metal, you will struggle to weld it and just blow holes in it, from past experience! rusty crap can't be welded, putty is a very short term bodge, not what you want to hear, but think a new one is the best option mate.

Holt's Firegum for sealing joints in new exhausts or Gungum for 'temporary' repairs to leaking/holed exhausts.
