I don';t wish to state the obvious but why not have a look at your log book ? if you can't find it on the motor,,,,,,,,,,,,

Engine code won't be on the V5. If it's a 2.1 it's not a DG or DF either. It will be DJ, MV or SS. Look here: http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpec ... engine.htm

Excuse me,,,,,,,engine code should be listed on a genuine copy of the UK registration Certificate........

Also the difference between a DG and an MV without any visable code numbers can only be confirmed with the help of X-RAY eyes........

Yeah its not on the logbook, and all the documentation is in German!!!!! The local vw dealer could not track it from the reg number. Again im sorry to sound dumb but how do i tell if its
DJ 2,1l 4-cyl. Flat4 water-cooled with injection from 85on 82kw / 112bhp.
or
SS 2,1l 4-cyl. Flat4 water-cooled with injection and cat from 89on 68kw / 92bhp

Many thanks

Look at the back of the engine (i.e. where the belts are). Towards the top you will see a black breather tower, like a black plastic pipe that comes out of the engine and sticks upwards.

Just beneath the base of this, the engine number will be stamped on the metal facing the back of the van. It will start "DJ xxxxxx" if it's a DJ, etc etc...

If it has a VW logo instead, or anything else really, then it might be a later recon (or replacement engine). Then it's harder to tell as they were put in different cases etc etc...

Do you know if the van has a Catalytic Converter? That could also answer your question. The german Fahrzeugbrief doesn't have the engine number on it.

if the dizzy has vac advance unit then its a DJ,if not then its a MV,SS,is the ecu under the bed (MV,SS)or behind nearsdide rear light (DJ) does it have a lambda probe and cat (MV,SS) and lastly look on the white sticker by your knees and see what engine type it has,cj.

Right i'm on it, i did check underneath the carpets but there was just loads of mulitcouloured foam insulation stuff stuck to the metal.

I'll go back to the engine but i'll be f**ked sideways if i can find any numbers on the block, i must be seriously missing something......

Somewhere on your German docs, there will be a power output rating. It should be on the export paper which you give/gave to dvlc. Whilst not specifying engine number / code exactly it will tell you the Kwh rating of the engine that was in at export, which may be of some help

OK, maybe it should be... assuming the engine hasn't been changed. Mine still reads DFxxxxx even though I bought it with a DG.

It's no longer either!
