My Bosch diesel pump is leaking so I made some calls regarding fixing it. I am advised that, if the seals are leaking, the chances are that some bearings have gone and will need doing. Apparently the removal, repair and re-fit of the pump is not a simple job and I'm quoted £400 plus extras that you should apparently get done while it's off, equalling nearly £800 (more than my van's worth!).
Has anyone else had this problem?

yeah duck,i waited till one of the mechanics at my local diesel pump place came out for his dinner.n offered him £100 to service a pump for me.as i couldnt afford the over counter price.....he nearly choked and couldnt wait to get back in to do his foreigner.....does all my bits for me now......but certainly couldnt afford over the counter prices......best of luck

Removal & reffiting can be done with a little knowledge .But dismantling and replacing all the seals requires knowledge of the assembly of the pump.There are a couple of seals which can be replaced without to much trouble .You could try and get a second pump as fitted on 1.6 passat or some pug engines.Read of the serial number on the pump body and do a search via internet web site vehicle dismantlers or ebay.I said removal & refitting can be done provided you no how to re time the engine and use a dial gauge for the pump injection .For a novice this could be daunting as mistakes could result in a damaged engine.If you are able to obtain a good second hand injection pump it would be wise to get a competent person to fit it.

yeah,, just get another pump from a breaker etc £30 tops

OK the hard part might be finding someone to remove and refit the pump (along with a new cam belt kit) but the pump service should only cost @£80 =vat, the price you have been given is obviously aimed at frightening you off,,,,,,,,, OR it is their way of telling you they don't want the job without actually say so.

First of all, how does the truck run otherwise? Does it start easily cold and hot, enough power to drive on the highway, any big/abnormal smoke/missing? If none of the above then the pump is okay. It probably wouldn't hurt to get it rebuilt, but there will be no advantage if it is running fine already. Go back to them and ask to just get it resealed. If they don't want to do it, send it somewhere else. A couple of things-if the front pulley seal is leaking badly it will cause the motor to be hard to start cold. Also the throttle shaft bushing will almost 100 % need to be replaced . IF you seem to think that the pump is on it's way out and will have to spend big money, if you aren't in a hurry i suggest sending it here to Canada to http://www.performance" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; diesel.ca . Not only will they rebuild it, they can modify it so you get up to an extra 20 hp from your engine without any other modification for the same money as a regular rebuild. Imagine going up hills without fear!

Thanks Caveman. The van starts first turn of the key, even after being left standing for weeks. It runs well (although it is the only T25 I've ever driven so I have nothing to compare it with) I'm happy with the way it runs. No misfires or anything.
Although sending it to the specialist you suggest seems a good idea, I'm worried about re-fitting the pump afterwards, I understand its quite complicated.
I'll look around for a diesel specialist who is prepared to re-seal it, as you suggest.
