Engine cutout

Hello everyone... hoping you can help. Got a 1984 T25, my first camper and I'm a complete newby when it comes to engines but hoping to learn.

My engine just started cutting out today, as soon as I take my foot of the accelerator the engine just dies. No problems re-starting it, but it's getting a bit dangerous stopping in traffic with the handbrake so I can keep the revs up. I've tried tinkering with that little screw that affects the engine running speed, but no joy.

Please help me!!

Ther might be someone on here that knows exactly what engine you have, but the rest of us need a little more info.
VW fitted many different engines over the life of the brick shaped van,
Some diesel some petrol, some with carbs some with fuel injection.

If you cant identify the engine post a pictur.

I recently had this in a CT Aircooled, I replaced the breathers, and took the throttle idle jet out and cleared it as it had some rubbish in it

An '84 is going to be a WBX engine, either DG or DF. I had this on mine. My first suspect would be the idle control unit. It lives in the nearside corner of the engine bay just in front of the coil. You can bypass it by pulling the two black connectors out of the bottom of the unit and plugging them together.

I can't find my Haynes manual to identify all these parts, but I'll have a root around.

Do you mean this...

The unit that 'asahartz' named is just a bit further towards the back of the engine bay (on the same side and level, and nearer the coil.) least it is in my 2.1 DJ
