So, whilst working on other problems, I've just noticed my exhaust has two massive holes in it...

How much am I looking at for replacing the silencer and tail pipe? Is it something that can be done with a socket set and some swearing or is it a garage job?

what engine is it, i only have some experience of aircoolds, changed my heat exchangers and silencer and tailpipe last weekend, new gaskets and fixings, and some exhaust paste , even lying on my drive is was an easy job, just watch out for rust in the eye, wear some protective glasses.

The exhausts on my van were leaking through the gaskets on the rear cylinder ports so when I took in in for it's MOT I asked the garage to fix it. They 'phoned me to say the exhaust pipes were no good, I went over to have a look and the flanges were really thin leaving very little to pinch on to the gasket and it was just blowing the gasket out. He said the pipes didn't cost a lot so I told him to replace the 4 pipes, the silencer had been replaced last year. The garage phoned me to say the van was ready to pick up and I asked what the bill was. £660!!!! I said you have got to be joking. After a bit of negotiation the bill came down to £476, which I thought was still a bit steep. In the itemised bill the labour cost was £74 and the pipes in MS were :-
front pipe £40.33
front pipe £78.11
rear pipe £68.36
rear pipe £68.96
exhaust fitting kit £19.60 and 4 exhast gaskets @£1.99 each, £7.96. They said they had little choice with the pipes because they had to get ones that would fit my existing silencer. He said it would have probably been cheaper to fit a complete new system! The pipes look like good quality and they have done a really good job and the van runs a treat.

Brick-werks do all the bits in stainless so you can replace it bit by bit. Had my mate buy a section for his van and the bits are very well made.

I'm having trouble removing the lower bolt on the LHS (opposite end to the tailpipe) - just cant get to the nut!

Anybody had any experience of this?

Well.. its prob very rusty and you'l end up cutting it off and drilling the old bolt out.... most exhaust systems when at end of life wont simply undo... I'm afraid...
