Help Please - Advice Needed asap....

Please can someone help. We need a new thermostat for our van. We've found one on Ebay, but have no idea if it is the right one for our van. How do we tell? Can someone please tell me if this is the right one to get. Our van is a 1982 with a 1970cc (original) Aircooled engine. Here is the link for the thermostat on ebay:-
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0298688071" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
A quick reply would be appreciated because there is only 22hrs left on the bidding.
BTW, is the van ok to drive while the old thermostat is broken, ie. the baffles are permanently open (stretched). I have been driving her since I got her, and obviously it has been broken since I got her.
Many thanks.

link dont work, but on an Aircooled motor the flaps go to failsafe mode of open fully, this will not harm your engine but it will take longer to warm up.
looking at his other parts i would suspect this is not the correct one as al the other kit is type 1 stuff
new thermostats are obsolete for these motors
second hand ones do turn up now and again.

That's weird, I copied/pasted the link straight from the address bar. Here it is again:-
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0298688071" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
BTW, I apologise for any past/future misspellings, I am dyslexic, and I'm hopeless unless my darling wife is around.
Thanks for replying anyway.

That is spooky, it's correct when I submit the message, but not when it posts. There's a gremlin in the works, or a glitch in the matrix!
Thanks for your help, and for replying so quickly. I won't bother with it then, but thanks for putting my mind at ease, re, still driving it.

Wasn't your fault, there's something weird going on with ebay links at the moment, the letters seem to get jumbled up when they're copied and pasted.

on an Aircooled motor the flaps go to failsafe mode of open fully, this will not harm your engine but it will take longer to warm up.
The way I understand it, is that it's not good to leave the flaps in the failed open position long term.
The flaps are there, and stay closed to help your engine to reach it's operating temperature as quickly as possible, when it's at temperature the flaps open and cooling air is ducted over the oil cooler.
Leaving the flaps open slows this process down and causes more wear on the engine as it takes longer to warm the oil to the required temp/viscosity.
It won't kill your engine overnight, but it will slowly cause harm.

it wont hurt the engine at all. in the failed to safe mode you get extra cooling all the time which just means the engine will take longer to get hot. just make sure that the flaps the thermostat controls are actually present as some misguided folks remove them and that deffo can cause damage.

I'm sticking with my original comment
http://www.vw-resource.com/vanes_thermostat.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.type2.com/library/cooling/thermost.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.ratwell.com/technical/Thermostats.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
these are just the online references,
I've read the same in at least 2 books!

ebay seller is selling a broken part! It's failed in open possition... filling up it's mount and all... unless it's over 100 degrees in the pic.
http://www.germansupply.com/xcart/skin1 ... ndgood.JPG" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Bottom one is good cold one. Top is failed or hot thermostat.
Link to full article on type 1 and type 4 thermostats.. and how to modify a type 1 to work on type 4 engine
http://www.germansupply.com/xcart/custo ... _in_t4.tpl" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Running without thermostat system working properly causes heating system to not work properly as well because engine doesn't reach operating temp like it should.... and on type 1 engines thermostat system forces more air to heater when thermostat is closed.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I don't know how long this thermostat has been broken, and how long the previous owner was driving in the state it's in.
I've checked out a couple of parts places, but can only find a new one for upto 1600cc engine, (mine is 1970cc).
Can anyone please suggest some sites where I might be able to find one. From what I've read, they're practically extinct, so how do I go about getting one?
Any help would be gratefully received.
Thanks again guys.

From my post above:
Read the instructions for how to modify and install a type 1 thermostat on a type 4 engine.
