stop the rot

just bought a westfalia california - i thought it had some rust in the drivers side wheelarch when i bought it and was expecting a repair would be needed but on closer inspection it looks like rust prevention coating has dried out and split with only some surface rust below - any suggestions for what to do to stop this deteriorating?
