Hi,
Just picked up a 1992 crew cab syncro, very happy. She has issues though and I need to get some advice. I have recently converted my wife's camper to Scooby power with and RJES kit. It is so good I will do the same to the Doka. I will also give her new brakes, bushes, bearings and hoses all round.
First question, who would you suggest to supply all these bits?
The next bit is where I get lost. The VC is shagged, its just hates tight corners and there's a whining from the transmission. I would like to keep the 4wd, but be able to turn it off. I live on Guernsey and there is no high speed action. From looking ath various forums I was thinking of getting a de-coupling kit and put a rigid bar in to replace the VC. Any other suggestions?
I also need the check the diff locks and pretty much everything else. Any lists on what I need to keep an eye on when she's on the ramp and I'm replacing everything.
Thanks for any guidance.
Cheers,
Jon

And also, how can I tell if its a 14 or 16 as the previous owner has changed the wheels.

almost definitely a 14" doesn't look like the rear arches have been cut as they are on a 16" and it lacks the 16's wheel arches.

"The VC is shagged, its just hates tight corners and there's a whining from the transmission"

That sounds expensive I'm sorry to say.
Take the magnetic drain plugs out of the front diff and gearbox and post photos up here Aidan should be able to offer you advice on them.
In the mean time I'd stop driving or at the very least take of the prop to if the vc is that tight.
Are all the tyres the same size? the back one looks a bit flat, to much difference in diameter could cause the vc to heat up and get tight.

to end on a good point it's got projektzwo spot lights on the front, the're worth a few £££!

Thanks,
The doka is from Germany. It was bought over to Guernsey a couple and sold already tired to a very nice guy who has hardly use it since.I just picked it up today. I'm not driving it until I have done the conversion, just big plans right now.
Other than the VC being shagged, is there likely to be any damage to the front diff?
I also need to check the front and rear diff locks, do you turn them on by pulling and turning the knobs in the cab?
I am intending to spend some cash on her as the previous owner was nice enough to let me have it for £100, 12months after he paid £4500 for it. The poor guy got stiched up, and he has been very nice to consider my financial position. It is leaking brake fluid, the noisy VC and the wrong wheels and tyres.
The wheels were fitted since it got here and are VW branded but the idiot put them on with the original studs so that the nuts only have a couple of threads engaged. They are also wearing 225R14 tyres. I will be selling these and investing in some orginal steels with 185's on. I will also sell the 1.6td engine complete.

£100!! Bargin well you can afford to chuck some money at it in that case.

diff locks are engaged by pulling the knobs on the dash, front one needs twisting and pulling, you may need to wobble the steering from side to side to get them to engage while moving forward, green lights will come on when they have.
best to do this on grass, do not leave them engaged on hard surfaces though as this can cause dammage, also be aware that you will lose steering control so dont try it on a busy road!

personaly i'd drop all the drive train out strip and rebuild all the drive shafts and have the gear boxes stripped by http://www.aidantalbot.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for inspection, then decide to rebuild or replace with good 2nd hand from the likes of syncrospares especialy as your planning to put scooby power through it all.
