hi jamie
welcome to the club
nothing fancy on the oil front m8. leave the expensive semi synths etc on the shelf and just buy decent quality mineral oil for car engines.
don't know about your other question tho

Hi Jamie
Use bog standard 20/50 and use the cash you saved to change it more often

That is the best way to look after oil matters for these engines.
Re Anti Freeze etc, as has been said, read the WIKI !! (lots of good info in there

)
Using the correct type of anti freeze is important on these engines as it prevents the internal head bolts from corroding as well as preventing freezing of the water. Corroded head bolts can be a serious issue if you ever have to remove the heads as they have a habit of shearing off on attempting to undo them and that is really bad news.
Where in our world are you Jamie ?
Will we see you at the shows ?

Branded 15W/40 oil is what you are looking for...although these are becoming more dificult to find as oil types have generally get thinner and are either semi or synthetic based now. 20w/50 is generally too heavy and if you can't find 15W/40 go for 10W/40 instead. There really isn't any need to spend a fortune, semi and fully synthetic oils are designed for long service under extreme conditions, something that is unlikely to happen in an ageing wasserboxer. Just change the oil and filter regularly (every 6,000 miles) using the cheaper but branded 15W/40.
As for antifreeze...this is fairly critical...most say use the VW branded G12+ (I think that's what they call it but check) but general consensous is 50/50 mix with a low sulphur based quality antifreeze to prevent those head bolts corroding which results in coolant leaks.
And change every two years as the anti-corrosive ellements in the antifreeze do go off over time resulting in a less effective coolant mix (in other words...the coolants corrosion inhibitors stop working over time)
Something that not all do....FLUSH OUT OLD COOLANT, don't simply drop the old and refill (a large quantity of old coolant is always left in the system, so needs flushing out)
