Re: 1980 Aircooled 2.0l - 2 Berth High top (Possibly a Viking conversion)

Hi all

So, here's my latest story..... the leisure battery was dying and I'm told I have no split charge relay so it was dragging down the main battery, I simply disconnected the two wires that were on the leisure batt and all was fine, we weren't off camping so didnt really need the leisure batt at that time. Everything was working well, including the interior lights and the zig unit showed batt level as normal. Great.

...then the radio packed up and I began digging about looking for faults (all fuses were fine) then after a while i noticed that the interior lights (in the back) and the zig unit had no power.... ouch.

I'm sure it's something I have done but for the life of me cant think where or what... any tips? advice where to begin? Or are there any decent electricians in south london/surrey who you could recommend (that dont cost the earth!)??

Yours
Dave

Does the leisure battery not power the zig unit?? :(

I would have thought that you should have a split charge system.

Post some pics up of leisure battery and zig unit If poss.

fuse 3 in the main fuse box!

and if all you did was take two wires off the leisure battery, and if you have no split charge relay, the everything off te lleisure will be still connected to the main battery.

Not all conversions have a relay to split the charge. Check to see if your ZIG has a switch labelled 'Touring - On Site' (or similar). It may be that your ZIG relies on you to select, via the switch, the correct mode of operation regarding isolating the main starter battery when camping and charging the lesiure battery when driving ('Touring'). You may have simply left the switch in the wrong position and removed the cables that connect the leisure battery to the ZIG and all your habitation electrical equipment. If the ZIG requires manual selection then it is possible to run everything of the starter battery (which is for emergency use) and not a good idea as it will flatten the starter battery. Could help you out but unfortunately too far away.
