hi just got this info from henning regards front outer cv joints

"front outer are differing, the one for 14" with front diff lock is the same like the one for 16" without, 14" without front diff lock is unique, as the one for 16" with front diff lock."
anyone know anything about this thoought they were all the same

Bernd list the diff lock 14 and 16 as having the same, I believe though that they all fit, the diff lock ones are just a bit stronger bigger?

Well I have non diff lock fronts and Im running a diff lock

According to ETKA 7 there are 3 outer CV joints listed

251 498 099 EX - 16"
251 498 099 EX - 14" with Difflock
251 498 099 CX - 16" with Difflock

so where did the standard no difflock 14" go?

Think this is what jebiga41 is getting at. The 14" and 16" outer fronts are the same unit.

seems as the man says

and hard to come by. Would this also apply to the other cv joints surely if VW were putting slightly beefed up outers on the front of diff locked 14's they would have put slightly beefed up cvs on the inners aswell?

all 14" and all non front locking 16" use the same cv front outer, only the 16" locking diff uses heavier outer

interestingly VW didn't put a 4 pinion locking diff in the front on 16" lockers , just the heavier front outer cvs
and they didn't put 4 pinion diffs in 2.1 non locker syncros yet they put 4 pin diffs in 2wd 2.1s both 4 and 5 speed
all locking rear diffs are 4 pinion
all locking front difs are 2 pinion

So can we upgrade to 16" difflock front outers and Baxters HD units for the front inner and the rear?

don't know never seen a 16" difflock shaft

I have one, brand new, in the box 16" front outer joint for locking diff on the shelf.
Obsolete from VW, Obsolete from GKN.
I can tell you that they are much larger than the 14" items, tho I never shecked the spline end.
Really must get 'round to putting it on e-bay.

Simon, Can you check the splines. Im about to splash out and upgrade the whole lot.
