Obscure Engine Code/Number question (DJ).

Guys,

I'm a bit obsessed with the history of my van, so forgive this one...

Bit of a strange question maybe, but is anyone clued-up enough to know about engine numbers (specifically DJ). Just noticed that my engine number "DJ 034915" ends in an asterisk*, suggesting that it has been rebuilt at some point.

I want to know if there's any way to tell whether or not this was the original engine from my van (was german until 2003), and how old the engine is (i.e. when it might have been built, from the serial number). Is there any resource to tell us this? I'm assuming not but you lot are a clever lot and often surprise me with your vast array of sources!

I've got some german paperwork but unfortunately nothing pertaining to this, I have the last TUV it was issued and some other stuff including Fahrzeugbrief, but they don't state engine numbers on their paperwork.

Phil.

these engines can be rebuilt and the engine number is not changed

also the engine number can be totaly removed

i had one recently that was a dj engine number , the number was unchanged but dj was over stamped with dg! still able to clearly see dj undeneath!

depends on who is doing the work and what parts are reused.

Haha oh dear, so the asterisk doesn't necessarily imply that it was carried out by VW then?

im sure they are not vw ones!

i know vw put a symbol next to the number which is like 2 arrows going round in a circle.
