1. No original jack, so I'm going to get a small trolley jack for my 82 2 litre - what weight to get... would 2 tonne be enough?

2. Need a wheel brace too... what size in mm would I need for a T25 with standard wheels?

3. Since I'll be using a trolley jack, where should I jack her up?? Don't want to damage the original vw jack holes or her underside!!

4. Oh, yes, there is always another question ha ha... all her tyres say 65 psi, but I can't find a psi chart on the van itself - what should the tyres be fully laden? Thanks!!

yes 2 tonne will be surfice.

Tyre pressure info normally on door pillar, or under dash infront of drivers right knee, but 45 front 55 rear - i run mine 55psi all round.

Thanks for all the answers... but don't know what those bits above actually are... I'll have to get the Haynes out!

Dont buy a cheap 2 ton trolley jack ,it wont reach your bus, unless its lowered or you are prepared to pack your jack up with blocks of timber. Not recommended!!!!

I agree.....a standard 2 tonne trolley jack has a very short lifting stroke and will barely reach anything under a T25 let alone lift it off the gound.
Also....you would probably have some difficulty lifting this sort of weight with a jack primarily designed for your average car (I mean physically pushing down the handle) my vans sticker says 43 (front), 53 (rear) on standard 185/R14C tyres

Hi as Ive got side bars on my van which are connected to the jack points so I cant use the standard jack! So I have a jack you can have somewhere in my shed so when we both go to the same show/meet ect I will bring it for you!

I wouldnt bother with a standard wheel brace. I have a 19mm, deep socket with a long breaker bar

19mm impact socket with breaker bar .... for the more 'substantial' VW owner to use

Thanks Tim for the offer of an original jack - that would be brilliant!

In the meantime, what sort of trolley jack WOULD be good if not the general 2 tonne jobs? Maybe a bottle jack would be better for general lifting then? ... it would certainly be easier in regards storage in the van.

Bought a wheel brace!!... thanks for that, luckily it came with 17mm and 19mm, so I can work out which when the time comes for a wheel change.

Also, still don't know what "under the swing arms, spring hangers" means... I have looked at my Haynes but can't find those parts listed by that name.

PLUS... In the summer I want to paint the underside of her ( a seperate post for what paint to use ha ha) but my drive slopes slightly sideways, and no room to do it on the road, is it possible, or should I say safe, to life one side so as to sort of 'even' her up? This would give me crawl space to get underneath to paint... perhaps driving one wheel onto a ramp would make it safer?

if you only want a jack for changing wheels whith punctures a cheap 2 tonne jack will do the job, it will reach the bottom of the rear swing arm, and lift high enough to change the wheel.(drop down on one knee and look under you van, it will be easy to see where to jack. Dont be using the silly VW jack for anything other than roadside emergencys.A good bottle jack will also do the job .
If you want a workshop jack, buy a big 4 tonner, and some proper axle stands, steer clear of halfwits cheapo stuff for workshop use.

Thanks for all the advice everybody. I've purchased a small 4 tonne bottle jack and a wheel brace for everyday wheel changes etc. The bottle jack should be enough to get her on axle stands as well.... I have found a cheap pair on Argos,

Would these 2 tonne stands be ok to take the weight? I imagined that since the van is, what, 2.5 tonne, then each wheel takes about 600 kg? Is that right?
