Yes thats what mine did. I got it out (Dash off job) and found I could get it going with WD40. But after fafing with the dash I decided to change the motor. I did think of laying in a thin lubrication pipe while I re-fitted the dash so I could oil it from outside. But then....

Yep, it'll be a slowly seizing motor. Next stage is 'the seize' followed by (if you foolishly upgrade the fuse), clouds of smoke from beneath the dash.

Drive with long johns and gloves and remove blower knob until you can get dash out to sort it or you'll then be needing a whole motor unit.

Bearing in mind how ominous the dash removal seems until you have done it once, the unit which failed has probably been in there for 21 years. I wonder what the situation will be in another 21 years?

Aye. Mind you its not all doom and gloom. Hot water bottle shoved down your jumper will help and if you DO lose any smoke, Lucas still have jars of harness smoke listed in their catalogue:

VW stopped making it after the early Polo unfortunately but its good to know you can still get it, even if its from Joe Lucas.
