Intermittent faults are not the best to deal with at the best of times and perhaps this is why you have had NO replies till now.....
All I can suggest is check all the basic engine components and their settings,,,eg my first point of interest would be an immediate check of the ignition components or should I say the easily replaced items such as dizzy cap /leads/rotor arm and spark plugs, even more so if it has been a while since these have been changed,,,,,,,,BUT unless something positive was found such as a burn't carbon brush in the centre of the dizzy cap I would hesitate to replace these items coz if you change everything all at once and it never happens again you won't know which bit has fixed your fault....
Regards
Fritz,,,,,,,,,,,,,

hi fritz nice one for your thoughts and advice ive ordered a new coil and dizzy cap although the latter was replaced 18 months ago and i thought for 8 quid why not.ive decided to replace the coil first as this is the only part, from the list you gave, that wasnt renewed 18 months ago and i'll replace the others,as you advised, one by one after that if its not successful. the thing that was freaking me, to be honest, was that the journey legnth when its occured has been virtually the same give or take half a mile and its never happened on a longer run.you know the way these things get you! anyway thanks again and i'll let you know how i get on thanks mart.

for info : classic symptoms of a duff coil, works fine when cold, once warmed up they break down internally, then work again once cooled down (usually while you are looking for something more obvious), repeat the cycle
