Van wont stop!

Hi

I have got a new problem with my 1982 2ltr air cooled van, it wont turn off. The only way to stop the engine is pull of the miidle lead to the dizzy from the coil (which gives me a shock), or stall it.

Apart from the obvoius ignition fault has anyone have any other thoughts about what it could be  . Will a squirt of wd40 in the ignition key hole be worth a go?

Cheers

Other than the ignition being seized ON inside the key, or possibly (but unlikely) a dead short between the feed wire to the ignition and the switchwire out of the ignition I can't think of anything.................

if you must pull a lead off, at least pull the low voltage on off the coil,(black )
sounds like you either are suffering a short circuit on the ignition sys ?(pos at key end) or in the engine bay, or someones got some wires the wrong way about

ummm, i pulled the middle high voltage lead off the dizzy, so there is another low voltage one then?

Well it hasnt been an issue until the last few days so wouldnt have thought that the wires are the wrong way about

How about the wd40 in the ignition then? just in case something has sezzed.

There is one peice of info that I forgot to say and that is that the last time it happened I went to the engine bay but before i could pull the dizzy lead off it just stopped - kinda like something just loosened up

Cheers guys

No the low voltage is at the back of the coil that the high voltage lead to the dizzy comes off.

Ignition switch could be sticking slightly, espicially in this colder weather. Go for a quick squirt of WD40 down the key hole with straw attached and see if it frees it up. If it doesn't, nothing lost, no damage done, just one thing to tick off the list! :D

Not sure if this the same with our vans, but years ago I had a '88 Nissan Bluebird saloon.
I had to call the AA as I parked up at works car park, turned off engine, pulled out key, locked up doors.
Enigne was still running!
Turned out it was the alternator?
Replaced it - was fine.

Might be a red herring, but might not be...

Uuuummm

Funny you should say that, but when I checked the Hanyns manual it suggests that if the "ignition" will not go off then its either the Alternator belt broken or slipping or a faulty alternator. Now I have checked the voltrage of the battery when the engine isnt running and its about 13.65 and when its running its about 14.27 which suggests that the alternator is working. However, could it still be faulty?

Do you remember if the primary fuction of your alternator (charging) was working or whether it was somthing else wrong with the alternator

Cheers

No thats not such a bad suggestion, i will have a look and change it I think

Cheers

oh one other thing I havent said is that all the vehicle electics, lights wipers only work when the key in the ignition is in the right position. If I turn the key to the off position and the electircs turn off but the engine keeps going

Cheers
