Hi Rob

It's just the bottom of the door but quite bad so I was thinking replace rather than bog it out.

I went around all the sills etc with a magnet and couldn't find any filler. Forgot to check under the footwell mats and around the fridge tho.

Have you been to see the van yet, ask loads of questions & check if the mileage can be verified - even then still sounds like a lot of money...

Maybe when you go to see it & if you have time, you could put a shout out on 80-90 to see if there is someone local who could come with you.

Hiya

I did think about asking someone to come with me but thought it a bit cheeky :D

It's a bit tricky as the owners are O/S and it's being sold by a relative for them. None of them know much about the breed (bit like me really LOL!). There is paperwork but I haven't seen it yet so I'll be checking that closely.

It drives quite nicely and the interior isn't too bad altho a bit shabby. Apparently the fridge does leak a little. It's had a new diff and new exhaust and virtually new pop top canvas.

I deffo won't be paying the asking price, am thinking around £1k less than that.

Being realistic, in my budget, I'm not going to get anything pristine.

Okay so I need some advice! What would you pay for this bus?

The owner just called me from NZ, they're obviously keen to sell. There is a full history from import in '89 but their agent in the UK has only scanned and emailed me the last MOT and service info from Jacks Garage.

They bought it autumn 2007 and have replaced the diff, exhaust and brakes. It's an original engine at around 77000 miles, less than advertised as it's KM speedo.

I am crap at bargaining and always am nervous making offers!

What would you pay? They're asking £4100.

TIA

They would be daft to send you the originals now wouldn't they?

If I were you I'd ring 'Jacks Garage' and ask them about it, seeing as how they did the last service and all. :ok

They're going to email over some more of the scanned docs today which is good. Am relieved there is more paperwork dating back to import.

Apparently Jack's quoted £300 to weld the door.

I might open proceedings with a £3k offer or is that tooooo cheeky!

Who cares if its too cheeky. I know nothing about westies but it sounds a lot to me for a van that requires welding before you have even bought it.

Cars arent selling at the moment - does the 4k price reflect that?

Make them an offer and they can only say no - its not cheeky, its business. If you really want it you will offer more, if they really want to sell it they will accept. Other than that walk away and you might get a call in a few weeks saying "we will take the 3k". At that point offer 2.5

Thanks for the advice. The owner did acknowledge that times had changed since they bought it, I pointed out there were plenty on ebay with better condition interiors etc going a lot cheaper. Altho they aren't westies and don't have the LPG fuel tank etc.

You guys are making me brave now - might get even cheekier and offer £2.8k and see what they say! I'd like to keep some cash back to fix that door and do an LPG conversion on the engine.

You can always buy a good s/h slider (they are available from the breakers on here and/or eBay)and get it painted. Start the bartering process by pointing out the door issue and 'current financial climate' etc etc

Good luck, Ian.

I know nothing about westies

Ringo

Thats because you dont like them

Ringo's right about the second hand car market and that will include vans. I went to Germany and picked mine up not knowing to much about them and i was lucky but it still cost me a few bob with repair bills on the first 3 outings, just wear and tear stuff.I have had to replace the Eberspacher(B2L) heater as i could not get that going, make sure thats working otherwise you are going to have to buy a another heater. Also you say the fridge leaks? A 1980 Westy will be air cooled not sure what problems they bring. PM IrishKeet he lives in London and has an Aircooled Westy, he's a really nice guy also LHD he's very knowledgeable, he's a "cock"-a-Knee. My advice would be to take your time, there's going to be some quality vans coming on the market soon due to the recession. Give this Westy a good coat of looking at with some one who knows them.I have yet to see two the same. Post some pictures, you will then get some honest answers and opinions.

Good luck

Thanks guys, this is the original link

http://www.gumtree.com/london/03/33871503.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I don't have any other pics but it's in pretty okay condition really. a few scratches on the paintwork and the interior sports a reather nice stapled on cork covering on the sliding door and rear gate!

Keet, ta for PM. have emailed you back.

what's the heater you refer to? the heating in the dash works and they have a fan heater that's included but it didn't look very special tbh.
