Why does my leisure battery keep doing this?

I have also checked the voltage and it reads 10.83. This i know is low and am going to put it on a trickle charge. I have vaselined the terminal and it always seems to kill my batteries this time of year.

Oh its in a 1988 with a 2.2 Subaru

cheap and nasty battery connections.
buy some good brass ones.

and make sure the vent pipe from the leisure battery actually exits the vehicle out of the battery compartment through the floor so the fumes leave the van

Just as mocki but to ad that easy way to clean is just pour boiling water from kettle, just a dribble though

You need to neautralize the acid that is causing the problem. I use bi-carb mixed in water. It neutralizes the battery acid that is causing the growth on your battery. Just don't get any of it in the battery! Pouring water over them will dilute and move the acid to wherever the water goes.. and start eating whatever is there too instead of just on battery post/clamp.

Whip um off clean um up then when you put it back together smear vasaline all ove the terminals wont happen then! Plus looking at your wires coming from the battery wow there thin, i would look at a much thincker wire esp the earth side!

To be honest, they could go anywhere. Best bet is to try to trace them to wherever they go.
As James says, they are a bit skin and thinny! :D

Mark, would you be interested in doing some tech stuff at DF? Like headlight wiring upgrade with relay, headlight buzzer, etc... anything else you might suggest?
